Colin Hanks plays a high-schooler named Shawn who lives only to surf and party with his friends. One day while sitting on the beach he discovers a book buried in the sand that changes his life. Shawn’s new ambition is to get into Stanford and become a successful writer. He writes a phenomenal entrance essay but makes the mistake of trusting his completely inept guidance counselor to get the proper transcripts to the school. He, his girlfriend and his stoner brother (Jack Black) embark on a chaotic journey to find the Dean of Admissions and explain the situation. The journey does not go as planned when the dean is accidentally drugged and Shawn’s brother burns down the office of admissions. In the midst of his antics Shawn’s parents end up getting back together and Shawn realizes that he does not have to escape his surroundings to be a great writer.
