Joe Tanto (Sylvester Stallone) tries to put his past failures behind him and focus on the future when his former boss Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) gives him a chance to reenter the racing world. But there's a catch - Joe must remain in the shadows while helping rookie racer Jimmy Bly (Kip Pardue) become a racing champion. To add to the tension, Joe and Jimmy fall for the same woman.
