Sean Thornton (John Wayne), an American boxer, returns home to Ireland, where he falls in love with Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara). Their romance, however, is complicated by local customs including payment of a dowry. Together the couple struggles over the obstacles to build a marriage that agrees with them and the traditions surrounding them.
