A small town police officer (Nick Nolte) with a ruined marriage and a tense—to say the least—relationship with his daughter (Brigid Tierney) suspects foul play when his best friend is killed in a hunting accident. Meanwhile, his already rocky relationship with his new love interest (Sissy Spacek) is strained when he is forced to take care of his abusive and aging father (James Coburn) in this somber drama.
