In the eccentric town of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Jewel Mae "Cookie" Orcutt, an elderly white widow, and Willis Richland, a black man, share a close friendship. When Cookie becomes weary of living and decides to join her late husband, she uses one of the guns that Willis has just cleaned as her route to the Great Beyond and unwittingly implicates Willis in her death.
