Samuel Goldwyn; Directed by Kazuyoshi Okuyama
Not Rated; 101 minutes; 1995
One of Japan’s most controversial and successful films, THE MYSTERY OF RAMPO has been hailed in its native country as ushering in a new era in Japanese cinema. An alluring blend of fact and fiction, the film chronicles the life of Japanese author Edogawa Rampo, whose works constantly challenged moral codes of the time. Within the frame of his true life story lies a bizarre murder mystery that exists only in Rampo’s imagination, a dream so vivid that his characters begin to take on a life of their own. When they begin to call out to him, he has no choice but to answer. As Rampo crosses the line between reality and fantasy, he becomes a man trapped in a web of intrigue, desire and madness, created by a mind that is spinning out of control. There is only one way back - he will have to write as if his life depended on it.
