Two Supreme Court justices are assassinated. Law Student Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) develops "The Pelican Brief," a theory explaining who killed the justices and why. When Darby’s associates who have read the brief turn up dead, Darby enlists the help of journalist Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington) to piece together the deadly puzzle of ambition, intrigue, and murder.
