Taking its comic tone and basic storyline from the Arlo Guthrie song, ALICE'S RESTAURANT is an exploration of the communal spirit and life-style of the mid-Sixties "hippie generation." Director Arthur Penn ("BONNIE AND CLYDE," "LITTLE BIG MAN") uses a gently wry touch to illustrate the contradictions and ironies of the counterculture.
