City cop John Book (Harrison Ford) must protect Amish boy Samuel (Lukas Haas) and his widowed mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis) after Samuel witnesses a brutal murder in a busy Philadelphia train station. John accompanies the pair out of the city and back to their small Amish community and in the process Rachel and John fall in love.
