IMITATION OF LIFE

Claudette Colbert, Warren William

Universal Pictures; Directed by John Stahl

Black and White; Not Rated; 106 minutes; 1934

John Stahl transforms author Fannie Hurst’s warhorse tearjerker into a serious and original statement on the sexual self-containment and child-absorption of certain American women who are by-products of Depression independence. A black maid (Louise Beavers) and a white widow (Claudette Colbert) team up to manufacture pancake batter. The pair’s common bond is self-manufactured suffering at the hands of their daughters.
