GAMES

Simone Signoret, Katherine Ross

Universal; Directed by Curtis Harrington

Not Rated; 100 minutes; 1967

This tantalizing thriller could be described as a hommage to Diabolique, though director Curtis Harrington provides many twists and surprises of his own. The story concerns an eccentric young couple (James Caan and Katharine Ross) who, spurred on by an enigmatic boarder (Simone Signoret), begin to play illusion-and-reality games of accelerating danger. A true horror film, Games builds a complex net of terror on the simple premise of uncertainty; by the last stages of the film the audience has been so expertly dislocated that they might begin to feel that they've lost touch with reality. Neat, insidious and mind-blowing, Games is one of the most strikingly original thrillers of recent years.
