DESTRY RIDES AGAIN

James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich

Universal Pictures; Directed by George Marshall

Black and White; Not Rated; 94 minutes; 1939

One of the best Western farces ever made. The wide-open town of Bottleneck orders a new sheriff—the son of the ferocious and legendary peace officer Tom Destry. Tom Destry Jr. (James Stewart) turns out to be a disappointingly easygoing type who's opposed to the use of firearms and relies instead on hilarious exemplary tales with rather grim morals. However, he proves quite adept at this work, whether it be intimidating would-be lawbreakers with extravagant sharp-shooting exhibitions or making the troublesome saloon girl, Frenchy (Marlene Dietrich), fall in love with him. Marlene sings "See What the Boys in the Back Room Will Have," "Little Joe the Wrangler," and "You've Got That Look."
